Percentage formulas explained

📐 Percent of a number

X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y. To find 15% of 200: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15, then 0.15 × 200 = 30. Handy for tips, discounts and tax.

🔍 What percent is X of Y?

(X ÷ Y) × 100. Scored 30 out of 200? 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%. This is the one to use for test scores and market share.

📈 Percentage change

((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. Always divide by the original value. From 120 to 150 is +25%, but from 150 back to 120 is −20% — change isn't symmetric!

🛒 Discounts & markups

A 25% discount multiplies by 0.75; a 25% markup multiplies by 1.25. Two successive 10% discounts are 19% off in total, not 20% — they compound.

↩️ Reverse percentages

X is Y% of X ÷ (Y ÷ 100). If $45 is 30% of your budget, the budget is 45 ÷ 0.30 = $150. Useful for working back from a deposit or partial payment.
