How to make a passport photo at home

Pick the country. The tool starts on the Australian passport photo (35 × 45 mm). The guides change to match whichever country you choose.

Take the photo. Stand about a metre in front of a plain, light wall, facing a window or other soft light so there are no shadows on your face or behind you. Have someone else take it at eye level — a selfie held at arm's length distorts your face.

Line it up. Drag and zoom until your chin sits on the orange line and the top of your head, including hair, falls inside the green band. Use Rotate left/right if the photo opened sideways and Straighten if your head is tilted.

Fix the background if needed. Choose white, light grey or cream, then check the edges around your hair and ears.

Common reasons passport photos get rejected

Head too big or too small — the single most common problem, and what the guides are for.

Shadows on the face or on the wall behind you.

Not looking straight at the camera, head tilted, or hair covering the eyes.

Glasses with glare or tinted lenses (the US doesn't allow glasses at all).

Edited faces — filters, skin smoothing or beauty modes. Only crop and change the background; never retouch your face.

How do I print passport photos?

Download the 6 × 4 in print and order it as a normal photo print at a photo kiosk, chemist or online lab, at 100% with no borders or cropping. You get several copies on one print to cut out. The A4 and Letter PDF sheets are for printing on photo paper, but check first whether your passport office accepts home prints; Australia, for one, does not accept inkjet prints.

Can I change the background to white?

Yes. Pick white, light grey or cream and on-device AI replaces the background. Look closely at the edges around your hair and ears afterwards; if they look wrong, a photo taken against a plain light wall is the safer choice.

Will my passport photo be accepted?

The passport office decides. This tool gets the size and head position right, but lighting, focus, expression, glasses and print quality matter too. Follow the official rules linked for your country, and if in doubt use a professional photographer.

Can I take my passport photo on my phone?

Yes. Ask someone else to take it from about 1–1.5 m away at eye level, in soft light facing a window, against a plain wall. Avoid portrait or beauty modes, which change your face.

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to top of head, on a white or off-white background. Choose United States in the country list to get the right guides and a 1200 × 1200 px digital file.

Can I make a photo for a size that isn't listed?

Yes. Choose Custom size and enter the width, height and head size your form asks for.
